Fishermen Say “Vira Bismillah”: The 2025 Season Officially Begins

Fishermen Say “Vira Bismillah” - The 2025 Season Officially Begins

The fishing season in the seas started on April 15. The annual fishing ban, imposed to protect fish populations, ended as of September 1, 2025. During the ban period, Provincial and District Directorates of Agriculture and Forestry frequently carried out inspections, preventing illegal fishing. As of today, fishermen saying “Vira Bismillah” are smiling again.

When Does the Fishing Ban End?

The fishing ban begins every year on April 15 and ends on September 1. This practice, aimed at protecting marine resources, is announced annually by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

Which Species Will Stand Out in the 2025 Fishing Season?

One of the biggest questions at the start of the season is which fish species will be more abundant this year. Looking at last year’s data, there was a significant abundance of bonito. However, experts are not as optimistic this year. A considerable decline in bonito is expected, while anchovy and horse mackerel are anticipated to be more plentiful.

Increased Support for Fishermen

Speaking at the season opening ceremony in Trabzon, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Yumaklı highlighted the government’s efforts in supporting the sector, stating:

“To increase aquaculture production, we provided ₺19 billion in production support and ₺700 million in assistance for small-scale fishermen. With other supports included, this figure reached a total of ₺51 billion. In addition, more than ₺50 billion in loans with reduced interest rates was offered to 61,000 fishermen. For the 2024–2026 period, the upper limit of agricultural loans was raised from ₺15 million to ₺40 million.”

Following his speech, the Minister released symbolic fish into the sea together with participants, sending off the fishermen.

The Buzz Begins

With the new season opening, Istanbul’s fish market has also started to bustle. Fishermen are selling their catches through auctions, though on the first day, the variety of fish remained limited.

Season Excitement at Park Balık Restaurant

The opening of the fishing season has excited not only fishermen but also restaurant owners. Park Balık Restaurant is ready to welcome its guests with fresh seafood options. Although the variety may be limited at the start of the season, customers will still enjoy the freshest products available. From whiting to horse mackerel, from anchovy to sardine, many flavors will find their place on Park Balık’s tables.

Wishing that the new season brings abundance both to fishermen and to our tables…
